Analyse of my questionnaire

To make a balanced and reliable questionnaire I tried to asked people of all ages and gender to answer my questions.

My first question about the music genre was disappointing. Most people prefer more than just one genre and all of them prefer different genres. I couldn't really find an agreement, in which the majority of asked persons would agree.
The second question was better and boosted my idea of doing a magazine about street performance: most people like to discover new singers, bands and genres!

I was surprised when I saw that men read more music magazines as women, but after looking in some music magazine I think I found the reason for it: music magazines are mostly advertised as magazines for men.

Most people also like to read music magazines online. That wasn't a really surprise for me.
The question of the celebs on the front cover made me insure about my idea to do a magazine about street performance: mostly women, but also men, are looking for celebs on the front cover.

Distributing companies

International Publishing Company

The IPC Media LTD is one of the UK’s distribution agencies. They sell over 350 million copies each year.
IPC Media group is separated in five divisions, each of them has their own target group.
-Connect,
-South Bank
-Inspire
-Advertising
-Marketforce

Development Hell LTD

Development Hell LTD failed as the company Emap and started as a new, little company again. In 2005 they bought the rights for Mixmag.

Natmags

The full name of Natmags is National Magazine Company. It is a British company, based in London. Natmags distributes magazines like Cosmopolitan and Men’s Health.

I have decided to do my research about the Bauer Media Group, because it seems to me that they have most experience in distributing music magazines.

Bauer Media Group

The Bauer Media Group is a German publishing company, based in Hamburg. The publishing house was founded in 1875. Until today the Bauer Media Group is a family business, managed by Yvonne Bauer.
Nowadays the company produces and distributes many popular magazines, and owns interests in the private radio and private television. The Bauer Media Group distributes music magazines like Q, MOJO and Kerrang. All of them are advertised as being men’s magazines.

The Bauer Media Group publishes 570 magazines in 15 countries, and 54 regional magazines in Germany  In 2012 they earned about 2.18 billion euros. About 11.000 employers are working for the Bauer Media Group.

This picture shows magazines at the kiosk in dolphin center. The music magazines are in the right corner.
Music magazines are in the same section like TV magazines and cooking magazines. I had to search for a while to find them, I thought they would be next to magazines about celebrities.

This picture shows the magazines in the supermarket Tesco. The only music magazine I could find was the magazine RadioTimes. The magazine was at the end of the shelf, I had to search for a while. Also here the music magazine is next to TV magazines.

I think you have to look especially for a music magazine by chance you can’t find one. Music magazines are underprivileged in their position in the kiosk, maybe because they have not a target group as big as fashion magazines or newspapers.

I would like to sell my magazine in kiosks and supermarkets. I think my magazine is different than other magazines on the market, people tend to buy the same things if there is not something which catches their attention, therefore I would try to sell it on the streets to build up a new target group.

I would also do an online issue of my magazine, because in my questionnaire I found out that half of the asked people like it to read magazines online.

NME

McCartney

A portrait of the artist as a new man

Analyse Music Magazine
I bought the october issue of the magazine NME with Paul McCartney on the front cover.
First it seems that this is a special issue about Paul McCartney (Title: McCARTNEY A portrait of the artist as a new man) Also that the cover lines on the left side are quotes of him, but the cover lines in the right hand corner list different musicians.
The first page of the magazine is not as usual the contents page, it is an advertisement for the brand Diesel. I think this advertise is matching with NME because it supports a wild, rock image.
It seems to me that NME is a magazine for men because most advertises are for men. Some advertises are also for the magazine itself or for music items.

The contents page on page four is called: INSIDE THE WEEK. Also the layout is compared to other magazines special, normally the layout contains a list with the page numbers and the title of the different articles, here the different stories are presented with a picture and a quote of the interviewed person, not all articles are mentioned in the contents.

Main article:
Return of the Macca
The contents page presents Paul McCartney with the quote: “Let’s write a song, man! Get your geet out! Come on” Paul McCartney imagines what he’d say to John Lennon today.
In the inside the article is called: Return of the Macca, which refers to McCartneys nickname.
The article about Paul McCartney is three double pages long. The first page is a portrait photo of him. The name of the photographer is written in a by-line: Mary McCartney.
The lead is an introductory of the article and explains also the title of the article: Paul McCartney is back with his new album.
The article starts with a drop capital. I was surprised about the beginning of the article because it just speaks about Paul McCartney and his life, I expected more about music. But at the second page the articles speaks more about music and the interview starts.
In the Interview I liked the mixture of music and Macca’s life. But the most important theme in the interview is still music, that I have also expected from a music magazine like NME.
On the last page of the article are four quotes about people who worked with Paul McCartney.
The pictures in the article showsPaul McCartney in different situations in his life: photos from life gigs, old photos with the Beatles, newer ones with music stars of our time, photos in the studio.

I think NME is a serious music magazine, because it focuses on important things. It does not mention stuff like scandals and gossip. It is a good magazine for people who are really into music, the magazine keep you current, for example are the last pages a Gig guide for all important gigs in the UK.

I think the price of 2,40£ is fair.

Top of the pops

Justin's BODY HANG-UPS!

Analyse magazine cover
Top of the Pops magazine is a monthly published teen music magazine. It features chart information, star gossip, fashion and beauty advice, quizzes, song lyrics and posters. It is a supplementary magazine for the TV show Top of the pops.

Masthead

The masthead is written in pink letters on white ground. The head of Justin Bieber (the main picture) is overlapping a part of the masthead.
Top of the pops uses always the same fond for the masthead, so customers can recognize it easily, even if you can’t read the whole text.
Top of the pops is a music magazine as a music show. The masthead is for both of them the same.
The ball on the top of the magazine is also a trademark for the magazine and the music show. It is positioned on the left-side third.

Banner/Selling line

The Banner is a sticker from the BBC and a cover line for a quiz in the inside of the magazine.  The quiz is advertised by a question (arousing curiosity) That makes the reader curious.

Colors

The three main colors are white and two different types of pink. Because of these girly colors I think the target group of this magazine are teenage girls.
These colors are unusual for a music magazine.

Cover lines

After reading the different cover lines I recognize that this magazine isn't just a music magazine. Stuff about celebrities seems to be more important than music.
The cover lines are very chaotic and written in different fond  sizes and colors. The target group of teenage girls will like this layout.

Main image

The main image shows the pop star Justin Bieber.  The title of the magazine: Justin Body Hangs-up! and the tagline “I feel really self-conscious!” are an anchorage to the picture.  Justin Bieber smiles confidently in the camera.
I think the magazine made a good choice to put Justin Bieber as a prominence on the front cover because at the moment he is one of the most popular teen stars.

The main picture is overlapped by to other pop stars: Aston and Selena Gomez. On the left side is a picture of the boy band One direction. On the left side is a sticker of a new band called The wanted.
Over the sticker are different clothes, here you can see best that Top of the pops isn’t just a music magazine.

NME

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS!

Analyse magazine cover

NME (The New Musical Express) is a weekly published music magazine in the United Kingdom.

Masthead

The masthead is positioned in the left corner of the magazine. NME positions the masthead always there so it’s easier to recognize the magazine. NME is written in capital letters. The masthead is red, white and black. It's very bold.

NME stands for ‘new musical express’, but it sounds like ‘enemy’ This fact supports the punk image of the magazine.

Cover lines

The cover lines are written in a bold red font what makes them look important. Some of the cover lines are questions, what makes the reader curious about the articles in the magazine (arousing curiosity)
The title of the magazine is an advertisement for the magazine: they have the first interview from a new band. Also the fact that there is another band named in the title is good, so fans of both bands will be interested and buy the magazine.

Strap line/banner

The strap line speaks about news in the magazine, that makes the reader curious.

Font

There are five different fonts used. Sans serif and serif fonts are mixed.
Most of the font is written bold and in capital letters in the three main colors. Just the strap line and the sticker on the left side are written in yellow, that makes the magazine more colorful.

Colors and layout

The three main colors are red, black and white. I think red and black create a striking front cover which also represents passion and power where the white may be used to soften the cover.
The layout is strict, that makes the magazine serious and so it seems important.

Main image

The use of the male artists Alex Turner and Miles Kane helps represent the rock genre of the magazine.  They are staring with serious expressions straight in to camera, this creates a powerful pose and shows them as strong and confident.

Q

3 Words... CHERYL COLE ROCKS!

Analyse magazine cover
Q is a British music magazine of Bauer Media Group. It appears monthly.

Masthead

The masthead consists of only one capital letter. The white Q is on a red ground. The Q is easy to recognize and it is neutral, you can’t assign it to a music genre. I think with this the magazine want to show that this music magazine is for everyone and every kind of music.

Cover lines

The cover lines are the information which is written in the magazine. This magazine does it very good, because they list different singers and bands, it is easier for the customer to scan through the magazine before they decide to buy it.
On the cover are two cover lines. First one speaks about the preview for 2010. It’s a link with the future. New acts are presented but also old ones which will still be in charts in 2010.
At the left side are names of famous singers and bands of whom the reader can find articles in the inside of the magazines. The words “& more” should tell you that you can discover more things in the inside of the magazine. It makes the reader curious. In this cover line are named many famous singers from different music genres.

The grey sticker on the right side of the magazine is a link to the past: John Lennon's lost weekend.

Font

The font is most written in capital letters. The font distinguishes in colors and size, but it’s always the same typeface.  The different sizes of the font loose the magazine up, because the layout is very strict. It is used a sans serif font.

Strap line/banner

The banner or also called selling line is an advertisement for the magazine itself: the UK's biggest music magazine.

Main image

The main picture shows the British singer Cheryl Cole. The picture is an anchorage: 3 words… Cheryl Cole rocks. The image of the woman standing in the rain, showing her tongue, supports the title about the rocking image. It seems that she is wearing a leather jacket; also this fact supports the rock star image.

Layout and colors

The three used main colors are red, white and black. But also grey is used. I think these colors make the magazine a bit posh and you can discover it easier in the shop because it is different to other magazines.
I think that these colors aren't male or female, it’s a magazine for both gender.

The layout is strict. It supports the posh image of the magazine

Q

Contents

Analyse contents page

This contents page is from the magazine Q, easily to recognize by the logo in the top left hand corner. As you can see in my research I have just done a research about a “Q” magazine cover. The design of the contents page is similar to the magazine cover (use of the same colors, fond) I think it is good when the front cover and the articles in the inside are similar.
As at the front cover are also here the three main colors red, white and black, which are often used by Q, so the magazine is easier to recognize.
The layout is simple and clear, it makes it easier for the target group to scan through the magazine before they decide to buy it.
The titles of stories are in capital letters, which make them stand out. Under the titles is a short description of the articles.

The layout of these contents is split into four sections. In particular the second section about the “OASIS SPECIAL!” stands out. OASIS SPECIAL! is written in golden capital letters.  Also the numbers which indicate the pages are written in gold. I think this gives the contents page a posh atmosphere. It seems a bit odd to me that the main picture at the content page does not show oasis instead it shows a band called: The courteeners.

MOJO

Contents

Analyse contents page

This content page of the magazine MOJO is from April 2010. It is the 197 issue of the magazine that should show how successful the magazine is.
The title MOJO is written in the same fond like the masthead on the front cover.
The colors are neutral: black and white. Just Courtney’s lips, the numbers of the pages and the title of the contents “FEATURES” is in red. This catches the attention of the customer.
The layout is clear, the customer can quickly scan through the contents, but I think not all articles are listed in the contents.
The main picture shows Courtney Love. Also the first article which is listed in the contents (called by MOJO: features) is about her.  In the right corner on the ground is a quote by Courtney Love. It makes the reader curious about the article and is already an introduction for the article. In contrast to the contents the quote is written in a serif font. I think this fond is used here because the quote is a link to the past. Also the image of Courtney seems vintage.

The layout is simple and clear, it makes it easier for the target group to scan through the magazine before they decide to buy it.
